On Friday 25th June 2010 Chawton Primary School welcomed a special visitor.  The MP for East Hampshire, Damian Hinds, visited the school to see everything that we’ve been learning about this year. 

First, he attended our Achievement Assembly where children are rewarded for being Star of the Week and for special achievements during the week.  During the assembly Mr Hinds spoke to the children about working at the House of Commons and had the chance to meet our very own Year 6 politicians. 

 
Eddie, William and Scott were candidates in the school’s own election held in May at the same time as the General Election.  They stood for their own parties that were created by the Year 6 children in Purple Class; the parties were Animaniacs, Stop Crime UK and F.A.S.T.

 
Mr Hinds was questioned by the three aspiring politicians about issues that mattered to their own parties, including animal rights, fair trade and anti-social behaviour.  He listened carefully and explained what the current government could do to deal with their issues.  The three boys were very pleased to have met a real MP, especially after they had been learning so much about elections and parliament.

After the assembly, Mr Hinds was given a tour of the school, during which he had a chance to meet the teachers and see the benefits of our themed topic work.  Thank you very much to Mr Hinds for taking the time to visit Chawton and find out about the issues that matter to children and schools.
