Last Friday (7th November) all of the children in Key Stage 2 travelled back in time to find out what it would have been like to attend school for a day in Victorian times. The children and teachers came to school dressed in Victorian style costumes and experienced a variety of Victorian style lessons.
Purple Class (Year 6) began the day with handwriting practice. They had to use chalk and write in the exact style of the teacher. Some children had the chance to write on slates too. After writing the alphabet the children had to practise writing some very Victorian sayings: 'Children should be seen and not heard' and 'Cleanliness is next to Godliness'. The children who could write neatly enough using chalk were then allowed to use fountain pens to write in copy books, in which they had to copy very detailed calligraphy style writing. During break time the children played with hoops, marbles and hopscotch. Year 6 then had to take part in drill exercises. They had to march and stretch in time with the teacher's instructions. After their physical activity it was time for Arithmetic, which involved chanting times tables. The children also did some sewing.
Throughout the day any children who did not work as well as they should have were made to wear the dunce's hat and told to stand in the corner! Some children were even given the cane, but don't worry the teachers only pretended and just gave out a slip of paper to any child who would have been caned.
Everyone enjoyed the Victorian day and a lot of first hand learning took place.
