'Love, Courage and Fellowship'

MFL: Spanish

As Multi-linguists, our INTENT is:

to provide an engaging Spanish curriculum that will develop the children’s love of learning another language and about different cultures and practices.

Opportunities are created outside of the class based learning to inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking, listening, reading and writing in the language – the four key skills of modern foreign language learning.

Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop children’s skills in the language, through regular taught lessons. The children are taught in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating.

Children acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Key topics covered include: polite words and phrases, salutations (greetings and farewells), numbers, colours, basic feelings, animals, classroom instructions, house and home, food and drink, the classroom, clothes, hobbies, Christmas and Easter vocabulary.

The intention  is that the children will want to become multi-linguists and to pursue modern foreign language learning further once they have left Chawton CE Primary School. It is also our intention that children will become increasingly confident to use what they have learned in other multi-cultural settings.

We IMPLEMENT this through:

developing key language learning skills set out by the National Curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures.

Pupils will:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Spanish (MFL) Long Term Plan

The IMPACT of this is:

As a result, we have a community of enthusiastic linguists who enjoy showcasing their developing Spanish knowledge and skills.

They are confident to take risks in speaking, listening, reading and writing across the wider curriculum.

They enjoy engaging in the learning activities.

Governors, through the Governor Visit Plan and Subject Leader Reports, evaluate the work of subject leaders in ensuring that the quality of teaching and learning across the school is at least good. They ensure that pupils are ready for transition to secondary school and are equipped with the skills to flourish and succeed as caring individuals.
